The Age-Defying Smile

The Age Defying Smile Tallahassee cosmetic dentistry

The condition of your smile is one of the first indicators of an aging face. Follow the 10 Steps below to create and maintain a brilliant and youthful smile:

1. Use Whitening or Bleaching- As teeth age, they naturally darken. Over the counter products do not have lasting effects. See your dentist.

2. Prevent Gum Disease- Gum disease destroys the bone surrounding the teeth and the supporting facial structures, causing spaces between the teeth, sunken cheeks the appearance of a 'pointed' chin and other facial changes. Gum disease is incurable. Once you have it you can only prevent it from getting worse.

3. Prevent Heart Disease- Prevent Gum Disease. Recent research has now made a direct link and found the same bacteria that causes heart disease is the same bacteria that causes gum disease.

4. Floss Daily- Keeping the gum tissue around your teeth, clean, strong, pink and vital takes 5-10 years off an aging smile.

5. Have Orthodontics- Today adults can have their teeth repositioned to create a more youthful face and jaw line.

6. Choose Porcelain Veneers, Bonding, or Porcelain Crowns or Bridges- Replace worn, fractured, or misaligned teeth or fill in unwanted gaps or spaces.

7. Have Cosmetic Contouring- Contouring of your existing teeth can oftentimes create a softer, more youthful appearance and smile.

8. Correct Bite Problems- A misaligned bite can be quite damaging and create abnormal wear. Not only does breakage occur but the teeth begin to 'over close.'' The nose and chin appear closer together and the lips appear fatter and jut out.

9. Prevent Halitosis (Bad Breath)- There are many possible causes of bad breath. Most of them are dentally related and can be prevented. Food that wedges between teeth decays causing odor and also becomes the breeding ground for gum disease to occur. Gum disease results in the smell of odor producing bacteria and is distinctly offensive. Smoking reduces the vitamin C and oxygen needed for healthy breath and tissue, causing a bluish color and a foul odor.

10. Replace Worn Bridges and Crowns- Old restorations show their age and yours. They also harbor germs and decaying gum tissue that cannot be cleaned and stimulated. This is another source of bad breath.

Caring for your teeth and smile now can prevent irreparable damage and create that brilliant smile you have always wanted. See your dentist often and remember a warm, attractive, smile, freely given, can brighten someone's day!
